Before accepting an AdBlue® / AUS 32 delivery, match the certificate of analysis (COA) to the shipment’s batch number, check the reported results and units against the agreed specification, and confirm the test methods. Resolve missing results, batch mismatches and unexplained deviations before releasing the shipment for use or resale.
This checklist is intended for distributors, fleet procurement teams, workshops and industrial buyers operating diesel equipment with selective catalytic reduction (SCR). It sets out recommended purchasing checks; the contract and applicable standard determine the actual acceptance requirements.
What is an AdBlue certificate of analysis?
A certificate of analysis records test results for an identified sample or batch. For a buyer, its value depends on traceability: the certificate must be connected to the material supplied, rather than simply describing a supplier’s typical product.
Ask for the actual batch report and a clear link to the delivery documents. A generic technical data sheet can help define the product, but it does not establish the measured results for a particular delivery.
Which ISO 22241 parts should buyers reference?
The ISO 22241 series separates product quality, testing and handling:
- ISO 22241-1:2019 specifies AUS 32 quality characteristics.
- ISO 22241-2:2019 specifies methods for determining the quality and chemical characteristics covered by Part 1.
- ISO 22241-3:2017 addresses handling, transport and storage to preserve product quality through to filling the vehicle tank.
At this review on 13 September 2026, ISO lists Part 1:2019 with Amendment 1:2019 and a replacement final draft under development. Do not describe that draft as a published replacement. Identify the edition and amendments agreed for the order, and recheck their status when renewing a supply contract.
COA checklist: identity, results and acceptance
Use the following as a purchasing checklist and agree any missing reporting requirements with the supplier before placing the order.
- Product identity: confirm that the report identifies AUS 32 / DEF and the product designation used on the delivery.
- Batch traceability: match the lot number to the container labels, bulk delivery record or linked packing list. Request a batch allocation list for shipments containing several lots.
- Report identity: check the issuing supplier or laboratory, report reference, sample identification and analysis date. Request production and sampling details where needed for traceability.
- Specification: identify the agreed ISO edition, amendments and any additional contractual requirements.
- Results: request measured values and units for the agreed test scope, together with specification limits and the methods used. Clarify results reported only as “pass” or “conforms”.
- Exceptions: ask about omitted tests, method deviations, revised reports and results that require technical interpretation. Confirm what a below-detection-limit result means before comparing it with an acceptance limit.
Keep the certificate, delivery records and acceptance decision together. If a batch number does not match, request a corrected document or a documented explanation before treating the report as evidence for that shipment.
Which quality parameters should the report cover?
Agree the required test scope against the applicable specification. As an example of commercial laboratory coverage, Bureau Veritas lists AUS 32 testing for urea content, refractive index, alkalinity, biuret, aldehydes, insoluble matter, phosphate and metals, alongside sampling and identity testing.
Ask the laboratory to identify the method and reporting basis for each relevant result. This article does not reproduce the full ISO limit table or replace the applicable standard. A partial test panel should not be presented as evidence that every requirement has been assessed.
Is a 32.5% urea reading sufficient?
No. Urea concentration is one part of the quality assessment. In its March 2026 DEF guidance, the U.S. EPA describes 32.5% urea by weight as the concentration associated with ISO 22241-1 and SCR calibration. Buyers should compare the measured result with the acceptance limits in their agreed specification, rather than treating the nominal concentration as an exact, tolerance-free pass/fail rule.
A concentration or refractive-index reading alone does not assess the other quality characteristics. For broader product context, see the AUS 32 specification guide.
Does a COA prove AdBlue trademark licensing?
No. A batch analysis report and permission to use a trademark serve different purposes. VDA identifies AdBlue® as its registered trademark, supplied under licence. Where AdBlue branding is part of the transaction, verify the relevant licensing and labelling arrangements separately. Do not infer those arrangements from an ISO reference on a COA.
When should a buyer request independent testing?
Consider independent testing when qualifying a new supplier, investigating conflicting results, or assessing material with uncertain traceability or handling history. Agree the laboratory, sampling procedure, sample identification, test scope and acceptance process before sampling.
For a disputed delivery, preserve the batch records and refer the acceptance decision to the responsible technical or quality team. A satisfactory production report cannot by itself establish that material remained uncontaminated during later transfer or storage. Include the handling review described by ISO 22241-3 in the purchasing process.
Documents and packaging checks before delivery
Request a batch-linked COA, the relevant safety data sheet, and a packing list or bulk delivery record. Identify any transport, export and destination-specific documentation required for the transaction before shipment.
Packaging details should be specific enough to check the delivery against the order. For canisters, record pack size, label requirements and seal condition. For drums, IBCs and bulk deliveries, agree container condition, unloading arrangements and suitable storage and transfer equipment with the supplier and site team.

Include these details when requesting a quotation:
- Product and quality basis: AUS 32 / DEF, the agreed standard edition and any amendments.
- Demand: shipment quantity and expected repeat volumes.
- Packaging: canister size, drum, IBC or bulk; labelling and pallet requirements where relevant.
- Delivery: destination, named delivery point, preferred Incoterm and target schedule.
- Evidence: batch-linked COA, required test scope, methods, SDS and shipment documents.
- Acceptance: any independent testing, retained-sample or inspection requirements and the process for resolving discrepancies.
- Site details: unloading access, storage arrangements and relevant equipment constraints.
