Automotive grade urea and agricultural urea can look similar in broad commercial descriptions, but they are bought for very different quality outcomes. The key difference is the purity profile and intended use.
Automotive grade urea
Automotive grade urea is used as feedstock for AUS 32 and diesel exhaust fluid production. Buyers are focused on high purity, controlled contaminants, certificate expectations and compatibility with the finished AdBlue® specification.
- Used for AUS 32 / DEF blending
- Evaluated against stricter impurity expectations
- Requires clear certificate and test method review
- Often supplied as prilled urea for technical production
Agricultural urea
Agricultural urea is bought as nitrogen fertilizer. The commercial discussion usually focuses on fertilizer form, nitrogen content, bagging, distribution requirements and import documentation for the destination market.
Why substitution is risky
Using the wrong urea grade can create product quality problems, certification issues and avoidable operational risk. A buyer producing AUS 32 should specify automotive grade urea and share the target standard before price discussions.
