What is crystal melamine?
Crystal melamine is the melamine raw material used in industrial production, including melamine-formaldehyde resins, laminates, coatings and moulding applications. It should not be confused with a ready-to-process melamine-formaldehyde moulding compound.
The ILO/WHO chemical safety card for melamine identifies CAS 108-78-1, EC 203-615-4 and formula C3H6N6, and describes colourless-to-white crystals. Put the substance identifier and required producer grade or buyer specification on the enquiry; the commercial name alone does not define quality.

Which quality parameters should buyers specify?
Define the required result, unit, test method and acceptance limit for each parameter relevant to your process. A producer specification can be a starting point, but its requirements apply to the identified grade and revision.
For example, the OCI Nitrogen GPH-LD product specification, revised May 2024 includes melamine content, water, ash, pH, turbidity and colour, with analytical-method references. This is an example of how a producer defines a grade, not a specification for every melamine offer or evidence that PANTEX supplies that producer’s material.

Does ISO 14528 specify raw crystal melamine purity?
No. ISO 14528-1:1999 concerns the designation of melamine-formaldehyde powder moulding compounds, while ISO 14528-3:1999 covers requirements for selected moulding compounds. Their scope is different from purchasing raw melamine monomer.
Specify the raw material against an agreed producer grade, buyer specification or an applicable named standard whose scope, edition and methods have been checked. Do not substitute a downstream compound standard for the raw-material specification.
What should a crystal melamine COA contain?
A useful certificate of analysis connects the reported laboratory results to the actual lot supplied. Agree the reporting requirements before the order, particularly where independent testing or a formal release process is required.
- Product and grade identification matching the purchase order.
- Batch or lot number linked to the bag markings and packing list.
- Issuing supplier or laboratory, report reference, sample identification and analysis date.
- Reference to the agreed specification and revision.
- Results, units, methods and acceptance limits for the agreed test scope.
- Explanations for omitted tests, deviations or revised results.
Request a batch allocation list if one shipment contains several lots. Resolve mismatched lot numbers or unexplained results before accepting the report as evidence for the shipment.
Is a technical data sheet the same as a COA?
No. A technical data sheet or product specification describes a grade; a COA reports results for an identified sample or batch. Ask the supplier to distinguish guaranteed specification limits from typical values, and agree which requirements will be used to accept the delivery.
When is independent testing useful?
Consider it when qualifying a new supplier, investigating conflicting results or assessing a delivery with uncertain traceability. Agree sampling, sample identification, laboratory methods and the dispute-resolution process in advance. A partial test report should not be presented as proof that all contractual requirements were assessed.
SDS and EU regulatory checks
Request a current supplier safety data sheet for the offered material and destination. The ILO/WHO safety card, dated October 2006, identifies dust-explosion potential and hazardous decomposition products on heating or burning. Its age makes it background information, not a substitute for the current SDS and workplace risk assessment.
ECHA’s Candidate List entry for melamine records inclusion on 17 January 2023. For EU transactions, have the responsible compliance team check the current listing and the obligations applicable to the substance, use and supply-chain role. A COA does not establish that all regulatory obligations have been fulfilled.
Packing and documents for delivery
