Specify a plastic canister by the liquid it will contain, the intended fill volume, material, closure and transport conditions. Then confirm compatibility, drawings, samples and any required approvals for the exact container and use. A capacity label or general “HDPE” description is not a complete packaging specification.

Nominal capacity and brimful capacity

State the intended fill volume and ask for nominal and brimful capacity on the drawing. Confirm the measurement basis, closure arrangement and filling conditions so purchasing and production use the same specification.

SS-EN 13972 addresses capacity terminology and gravimetric measurement for rigid plastic containers; its scope includes canisters and jerricans up to 20 L nominal volume. Agree the applicable drawing and measurement method when capacity is an acceptance criterion. Brimful capacity should not be treated as the permitted filling instruction for every liquid.

Material and chemical compatibility

Provide the liquid identity, concentration, filling and storage temperatures, and expected contact duration. Specify the polymer and any colourant or recycled-content restrictions relevant to the project.

Ask for compatibility evidence for the complete packaging system, including the body, cap, gasket and dispensing accessories. Where testing is needed, agree the method, exposure conditions and acceptance criteria before approving production.

ASTM D543-21 describes practices for evaluating plastics against chemical reagents. It is a reference for designing an assessment, not a universal liquid-to-HDPE compatibility chart or proof that a finished canister is suitable.

Closure, filling and dispensing requirements

Include the interface details in the drawing and offer:

  • Neck dimensions and closure type.
  • Gasket or seal material and tamper-evident features where required.
  • Whether venting is proposed and the conditions for its use.
  • Spouts, taps or other dispensing accessories, supplied fitted or separately.
  • Supplier closing instructions and filling-line requirements.
  • Leak, handling and sample-approval criteria agreed for the project.

Evaluate the complete container and closure together. Changes to a cap or gasket should be reviewed against compatibility and any applicable packaging approval.

Dangerous-goods and food-contact checks

Ask the responsible transport specialist to confirm the filled product’s classification, transport modes and destination requirements. When dangerous-goods packaging is required, obtain the applicable approval or test evidence, marking details and closing instructions for the proposed container. PANTEX’s listing does not claim that every canister has such approval.

For US shipments, PHMSA’s section 178.509 reference points to the standards for plastic drums and jerricans. Have the shipment-specific requirements checked in the applicable rules; a general buyer guide does not select an authorised package for a particular substance.

For EU food-contact plastic packaging, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, consolidated on 14 July 2026, includes declaration-of-compliance and supporting-document requirements. Request documentation covering the intended food and contact conditions, and have the responsible compliance team assess the complete container and closure. “Food grade” wording alone is insufficient.

Branding, palletisation and delivery

Provide colour, label-panel dimensions, artwork responsibilities and any outdoor-exposure requirements. Agree units per layer and pallet, protection during transport and receiving-site constraints. For customised projects, include first-order quantity and expected annual demand so tooling and minimum-order requirements can be assessed.

Does a product listing prove compatibility or certification?

No. Confirm the exact container, closure, contents and conditions of use against the evidence supplied for the offer. Resolve missing evidence before approving the package.
