Choose a PA6 grade by matching the component’s loads, temperature, moisture exposure and dimensional tolerances to the exact material datasheet. Compare unfilled and reinforced formulations, then validate the proposed grade in the intended manufacturing process. “PA6” or “nylon 6” alone is not a complete purchasing specification.

PANTEX reviews PA6 polyamide enquiries for mechanical components, wear parts, housings and extruded industrial components. Grade availability, documentation and packaging are confirmed in the quotation.

What should a PA6 specification include?

Identify the existing approved producer grade where one exists. Otherwise, provide the part drawing, processing method and performance requirements, including:

  • Applied loads, their duration and operating temperature range.
  • Contact with water, oils, cleaning agents or other media.
  • Critical dimensions and allowable movement during service.
  • Unfilled or reinforced formulation, filler type and nominal percentage.
  • Colour, surface requirements and required application declarations.

ISO 16396-1:2022 provides a designation framework for polyamide moulding and extrusion materials. A designation does not establish that two materials have identical engineering performance. The standard’s scope excludes monomer casting-type PA6; distinguish moulding resin from cast-nylon stock when preparing an enquiry.

Why do dry and conditioned values matter?

Moisture affects polyamide properties. Request the conditioning state alongside each modulus, strength and impact result, and compare grades using equivalent methods and conditions. Include service moisture in the dimensional review rather than qualifying a part only immediately after moulding.

For example, the BASF Ultramid B3K datasheet dated February 2026 lists typical tensile modulus of 3,100 MPa dry and 1,000 MPa conditioned, and yield stress of 80 MPa dry and 40 MPa conditioned. These values illustrate one grade’s conditioning effect; they are not universal PA6 limits or evidence of a PANTEX supply relationship.

ISO 1110:2019 covers accelerated conditioning of polyamide test specimens. Agree the conditioning procedure with the supplier and laboratory; accelerated and standard-atmosphere conditioning can produce slightly different mechanical results.

Unfilled or reinforced PA6?

Evaluate the formulation against the component rather than selecting by filler percentage alone. For reinforced material, request data relevant to stiffness, strength, dimensional behaviour and the direction of loading. Review moulded samples for fit, warpage and surface appearance.

A second grade labelled with the same glass percentage still requires qualification. Agree which properties are contractual acceptance limits and which are typical datasheet values used for initial screening.

Processing, drying and delivery checks

Request the grade-specific processing and drying instructions, permitted moisture before processing, and handling guidance after opening a pack. Match viscosity and the recommended process to the equipment and part geometry. Do not adopt another grade’s drying temperature or time as a universal PA6 instruction.

When comparing melt-flow results, retain the reported units, temperature, load and method. A matching flow value alone does not establish equivalence in the tool. Confirm pack weight, moisture protection and pallet requirements with the offer.

Can PA66 replace PA6 directly?

PA6 RFQ checklist

  • Existing grade or target specification and revision.
  • Component drawing, process, loads and operating environment.
  • Reinforcement, colour and critical dimensional requirements.
  • Property limits with test method and conditioning state.
  • Required datasheet, SDS, declarations and qualification samples.
  • Order quantity, repeat demand, packaging, destination and target delivery date.
