Select PA66 over PA6 when the proposed PA66 grade meets the part’s thermal, mechanical and application requirements more effectively than the PA6 candidate. Compare actual grades at equivalent test conditions, including moisture state, reinforcement and load duration. Neither family is automatically the better choice for every component.

PANTEX reviews PA66 supply enquiries for mechanical, electrical, industrial and automotive mouldings. The enquiry should explain the function and qualification requirements; a family listing does not establish a specific grade’s suitability or approval.

What should buyers compare first?

Start with the operating conditions and the current approved material. Build the comparison around:

  • Continuous and occasional temperature exposure, with duration.
  • Applied load, stiffness requirements and allowable deformation.
  • Moisture exposure and dry versus conditioned property data.
  • Reinforcement type, percentage and any heat-stabilisation requirement.
  • Impact, dimensional and assembly requirements.
  • Electrical or flammability evidence where the application requires it.

Melting temperature is not a service-temperature rating

Producer data illustrate why thermal figures must be interpreted carefully. BASF’s Ultramid A3K BK00464 sheet, dated March 2024, reports a melting point of 260 °C and an HDT A value of 75 °C. The February 2026 Ultramid B3K PA6 sheet reports 220 °C melting temperature and 60 °C deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa.

These are separate grade examples, with different formulations and document dates, rather than a controlled family comparison or universal acceptance limits. They do not establish continuous service capability. Request ageing, load and application data for the actual offered grade, and validate the component under its intended conditions. These examples do not imply that PANTEX supplies BASF material.

Reinforcement and heat stabilisation

Specify the filler type and nominal percentage, plus the named heat-stabilised grade when it forms part of the approved specification. Ask the technical team to assess dimensional behaviour and loading direction in the moulded part.

For a component under sustained load, request suitable long-term data and a qualification plan. A short-duration material test alone does not answer every question about an assembled component over its working life.

Moisture and comparable test conditions

Record dry or conditioned state next to strength, stiffness and impact values. Compare temperatures, specimen preparation, test method and conditioning procedure before drawing conclusions from differences in numbers.

ISO 16396-1:2022 provides the polyamide designation framework; it does not make identical designations a guarantee of identical performance. Keep the full producer grade and datasheet revision in the purchase specification.

Is every PA66 grade flame-retardant?

No. Request evidence for the exact formulation, colour and thickness relevant to the component. State the required test and classification in the enquiry, and have the responsible compliance team confirm the documentation. PANTEX’s PA66 product guidance explicitly makes this a grade-specific check.

Can a grade change keep the same moulding settings?

Do not assume so. Review the offered grade’s drying and processing recommendations, tool dimensions and assembly behaviour, then approve trial parts before series release.

PA66 versus PA6 RFQ checklist

  • Current material and the reason for considering a replacement.
  • Part drawing, temperature profile, loads, exposure and tolerances.
  • Reinforcement, stabilisation, colour and processing method.
  • Required property limits with methods and moisture state.
  • Electrical or flame documentation, including relevant thickness.
  • Sample approval criteria, quantity, packaging, destination and timing.
